460 SQUADRON (RAAF) - INDEX of AIRCREW, PRISONERS of WAR,
EVADERS,INTERNEES and RAAF, RAF, and WAAF GROUNDCREW.
Listed herein are those Aircrew shown in the Operational Records
Book,(RAF Form), and the Pilots/crew groups with whom each flew as a
members of an operational crews.
Those RAAF aircrew shown on the ORB's, who couldn't be identified
as having flown as a member of an operational crew, are listed in the
Index with their Service Numbers and Date of Arrival, but with no Crew
Group Numbers. This usually occured when Aircrew arrived at the
Squadron in transit, or near the end of hostilities.
The Index of Aircrew shows the Name, Mustering, and Crew Group
Number/s of the Pilots under whom each flew. If a crew member became
a casualty the Index shows the date and category of that casualty.
The last Pilot reference listed is the one where the casualty was
occurred. The total number of operations flown by each aircrew member
is listed.
The Crew Group Number/s refer to the Pilot and Crews Section, which
records the make-up of the crews and total of each crew group's
operations.
The top line records the Pilot's name and the nature of the
casualty sustained by the crew, as well as details of any 2nd Pilot
duties flown under another pilot, and finally the pilot's operational
total at end of his current tour.
The second line shows the date and name of any Pilot who flew as his
2nd Pilot, and a short description of any interesting events. The
rest of the paragraph shows lists each different combination of crew
menbers, with the total shown at the bottom of each list.
The details of Prisoners of War and Internees were difficult to
determine because the O R B's seldom showed what happened to the
missing persons. These names were struck off the Squadron Strength
and transferred to War Casualties Non-effective Accounts Dept.,"With
Effect From" the date they were posted as Missing.
When W R Chorley's excellent book "Bomber Command Losses" became
available it proved to be an excellent reference with the details of
casualty categories. Where crew members died, details of interment
locations were also given, and I have been able to expand the Prisoner
of War Index to include Sections on Evaders and Internees.
The names of RAAF Groundcrew are shown with their Service Numbers,
and the first and last dates of their "Attachment" to the Squadron,
but I was unable to get similar details of the RAF and WAAF Groundcrew.
Bomber Command stipulated that permission of each person, or next of kin,
must be obtained before the information could be released.
However, I recently found in our "new" copies of ORB's, the names
of RAAF and RAF members listed on a Movement Order issued for the
transfer of the Squadron from Molesworh to Breighton, in January 1942.
I have included them in the Groundcrew section, together with others
whose names were recollected by our Association members.
Unfortunately, no such details are available of those RAF and WAAF
Groundcrew who later were attached to 460 Squadron, or were part of
the station staff who contributed so much to the Squadron's
performance. These names will be included with the Groundcrew should
they ever become available.
